Applying for jobs but not hearing back from employers? Searching for a new role with little success can be one of the most disheartening things ever. Falling into the ‘application black hole’ can discourage jobseekers very easily, and often they end up assuming the worst. In this article we give some possible reasons about why you might not be getting a response from employers, and what you can do about it.

They’ve found your social media – and they don’t like what they find

The majority of employers are not only screening your CV, but also tracking down your social media accounts. This means they will look at the photos you post, the tweets you type and the posts you like. Anything slightly objectionable on any of your social media platforms can rule you out for a position. It is so easy to ensure your accounts are private, and you can set rules on who can see what you post, be that friends, or friends of first. Make sure your accounts are set to private to make sure your online presence doesn’t rule you out for an excellent opportunity.

Double check you’ve applied for the job the right way

This may seem obvious, but its an easy mistake to make – and it is so easy to rectify! For example, you may have sent your CV and cover letter to a recruiters email address, when it clearly states in the job description that all applications must go through their online portal. If you didn’t pick up on that initially, don’t worry! Reapply through the correct channels and send a brief note to the hiring manager apologising for your mistake. You’re not personalising your CV & Cover Letter

To get the most out of your application, don’t just attach your CV and send! Every CV and cover letter should be edited to fit the job description; make sure to clearly highlight the experience and key skills you have that are emphasised in the job description. Not only does this help the hiring manager clearly see that you can do the job, but it shows you are genuinely interested in the role and that you will put in the work to prove it. By the same token not customising your application can look like you are not putting in effort, and that is not a message you want to convey.

Automate as much as possible

With all the tools that job boards have available for candidates these days, finding a new role has never been easier. As it can sometimes feel endless applying for roles, do your best to automate the first step to make your life easier. Most job boards have job alerts that can flag new jobs you may be interested in for you. Set your requirements, such as salary, travel distance etc and you can get email updates when new roles are posted, or even push notifications right to your phone. By saving time on searching, you will then gain time to customize and improve your applications!
